Wonder Bar - Beacon, New York

Project type

Restaurant Review

Date

July 2026

Location

Beacon, New York

We stopped into Wonder Bar for Sunday brunch after catching The Odyssey next door, and it turned out to be one of the best dining experiences we've had in a long time — though not for the reasons you might expect.

First, a little history, because this place has a story worth knowing. Wonder Bar sits right beside the Beacon Theater, which opened in 1934 as a 1,200-seat movie palace on Main Street. The original Wonderbar nightclub operated in the same era, drawing musicians and lounge singers back in the 1930s and '40s. The theater eventually went dark in 1968 and sat through decades of ups and downs until local developer Brendan McAlpine rescued the building from foreclosure in 2015. After extensive renovations, the theater reopened in 2019, bringing first-run movies back to Main Street for the first time in decades, and in early 2020 the cocktail lounge next door — in the space that once housed Harry's Hot Sandwiches — was reborn as Wonder Bar, a loving nod to its 1930s namesake. Walking from the movie straight into that gorgeous restored space, with its checkerboard floor and vintage glow, feels like stepping back into the golden age of going out.

Now, to brunch. We started with the Prosecco flight, which was so much fun — four pours paired with white cranberry, peach, orange, and pomegranate juices. A perfect way to ease into a Sunday afternoon.

I kept it simple: Eggs Benedict with Canadian bacon. Easy, classic, and it was just fine. David, on the other hand, went adventurous with the Duck Confit Hash topped with two over-easy eggs. Sadly, that adventurous spirit didn't pay off — it just wasn't for him.

Here's where Wonder Bar earned a customer for life. When our server came by to check on us, I said mine was fine, but David made a face and admitted he really didn't care for his. No fuss, no complaint — just an honest answer to an honest question. At the end of the meal, the server brought the bill and had quietly taken the duck off. We were genuinely surprised. When we thanked him, he said, "You didn't care for your meal, and I'd rather you walk away having a great experience than feeling disappointed."

That, right there, is platinum hospitality in a sentence. Nobody asked for anything. He just did it, because he understood what hospitality actually means. And beyond that one gesture, he was simply an AMAZING server from start to finish.

Yes, we will absolutely be back — for the history, the Prosecco flights, and most of all, because of the presence of someone in hospitality who truly exemplifies it. Kudos to him!!
