A Local's Take on Cooper's — Beacon's Best-Kept Not-So-Secret
Tucked just off the beaten path of Main Street sits a little brick building with more stories inside its walls than most restaurants twice its size. That's Cooper's — and if you haven't found it yet, consider this your invitation.
Cooper's holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating bar in Beacon, with roots stretching all the way back to 1872. Over the decades, that same building has worn a lot of different names — Sunderland's, Bryant's, Victor Zaleski's, Andy Mordas' Bar & Grill, Gallagher's, Zep's, Annie Cabe's, Papa Joe's, and most recently Dogwood before it changed hands in 2023. Every one of those names poured drinks and told stories in the exact same room you're sitting in tonight. That's not just history — that's a century and a half of Beacon showing up for a drink after a long day, and Cooper's is simply the latest to carry the torch.
The name itself is a sweet touch — Cooper's is named in memory of co-owner Brendan McAlpine's beloved French bulldog, which tells you a lot about the vibe they're going for: warm, personal, unpretentious. McAlpine and his partner Marjorie Tarter clearly know hospitality — between the two of them they also run The Beacon movie theater and Wonderbar next door, the Hudson Valley Marshmallow Company, and The Bird & Bottle Inn down in Garrison, with McAlpine's family behind The Roundhouse in Beacon as well. This is a couple that knows how to build a room people want to come back to.
Now, let's talk about why you'll actually want to go: the food and drinks hold their own against the history. The bar food is exactly what a place like this should serve — hearty, unfussy, the kind of food that pairs perfectly with a long conversation and a full glass. And speaking of glasses, the beer list here is genuinely impressive — clearly curated by people who care about what's on tap, not just what's easy to order. Oh! And they have a very reasonable (for Beacon) Happy Hour!
Service is quick and attentive without ever feeling rushed — the kind of staff who remember your order after one visit and make you feel like you belong there, even the first time you walk in.
That's really the heart of Cooper's: it's a watering hole built for locals, tucked just far enough off Main Street that it feels like your own little secret. Walk in once, and you're not a customer anymore — you're family. In a town that's changed a lot over the years, Cooper's is proof that some things — a good drink, a good story, and a room that remembers you — never go out of style.
Cooper's earns its place as one of Beacon's essential stops — not because it's flashy, but because it's real.
Silver Classic Men Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5)
Bottom line: Cooper's is a must-visit for any Silver Classic Man looking for substance over flash — real history, real character, and a room that treats you like a regular from the first pour.
